Communities

Few cities feature such diverse communities within its borders as Milwaukee. Just a few miles separate south side residential blue collar suburbs from avant garde art commu-nities on the city’s north east side. Some of the city’s most intriguing neighborhoods include:

Bay View

With north side rents and mortgages running high, this lake-side suburb just south of the city is booming. A unique blend of ethnic neighborhood and vibrant, young progressive en-clave, every month brings more trendy stores and restaurants. Locals enjoy Groppi’s Italian Market, Club Garibaldi and Q’s Barbecue. Brady Street: Located just east of downtown, Brady is the headquarters for Milwaukee’s 20 and 30-somethings looking or good food and entertainment.

East Side

Home to the area’s oldest movie theatre (the nationally recognized Oriental Theater) and some of city’s trendiest bars and restaurants, the "east side" is home to the city’s most artistic and progressive minds.

Riverwest

A neighborhood west of the Milwaukee River near Milwaukee's east side, Riverwest is the heart of the downtown area’s dedicated rebuilding effort. Condos, apartments, shops, res-taurants and businesses are filling this area due to its convenient proximity to downtown.

Third Ward

An upper class neighborhood located just to the south of downtown, the Third Ward is noted for a large number of condominiums and loft apartments. Currently home to the city’s gay community, the Third Ward was once the scene of a deadly urban fire -- the deadliest until the Great Chicago Fire.

Tory Hill

The downtown neighborhood surrounding Marquette University has gone through significant renovation in recent years as the university has worked with local officials to improve the campus environment and the surrounding areas.
